MUSCAT: Oman’s U-23 national team suffered to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Iraq in their second Group G fixture of the AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026 Qualifiers on Saturday. The decisive goal came in the 63rd minute when Mustafa Qabeel latched onto a cross from Amoori Faisal and converted from close range to hand Iraq their second consecutive win of the campaign.

Oman had opened their campaign with a goalless draw against hosts Cambodia in challenging weather conditions, while Iraq had thrashed Pakistan 8-1 in their opening fixture. Saturday’s result put Iraq at the top of Group G with six points from two matches, while Oman remained on one point, with their chances of advancing to the finals now significantly reduced. Only the winners of the 11 groups and the four best second-placed teams will join hosts Saudi Arabia in the 2026 finals.

The Omani side entered the contest missing the services of three key players including Ahed al Mashakehi, Sultan Badr, and Hamed al Naimi who are currently on duty with the senior national team in the CAFA Nations Cup. Their absence proved costly as Oman struggled to maintain rhythm and break through Iraq’s resilient backline.

Iraq dominated the early proceedings, with opportunities falling to Muslim Mousa and Amoori Faisal, whose powerful shot in the 38th minute was denied by Oman goalkeeper Ibrahim al Kindi. The breakthrough eventually came just past the hour mark, when Ali Jasim’s pressing won possession high up the pitch. Jasim quickly released Faisal on the left, who delivered a precise cross for Qabeel to slot home at the near post. Oman were handed a potential lifeline minutes later when Iraqi midfielder Ali Mokhalad was dismissed after receiving his second yellow card. Despite enjoying the numerical advantage for the final 25 minutes, Oman failed to capitalise, with Iraq’s disciplined defense keeping them at bay until the final whistle.

Oman will aim to bounce back in their final group fixture against Pakistan on Tuesday, knowing that only a victory will keep slim qualification hopes alive. Iraq, meanwhile, will face Cambodia as they look to consolidate their top spot and confirm passage to the AFC U23 Asian Cup finals.
