Among the exhibiting artists is Anwar Sonya, whose masterful watercolour works span scenes of Oman’s traditional weddings, historic architecture, and generations of families. “I hadn’t painted with watercolours for some time,” Sonya shares, sitting amid his swirling, translucent landscapes. “Initially, the transparency of watercolours was challenging—I often struggled to control the medium. But with practice, I discovered new depths, and now I appreciate how watercolours can convey both the visible and the intangible—a sense of fleeting moments and memories.” His works evoke a deep sense of nostalgia, capturing Oman’s cultural essence through a vivid, fluid palette.

Sonya emphasizes that the exhibition is more than just showcasing artwork; it reflects the evolving artistic community in Oman. “More young people are now pursuing art seriously, supported by government initiatives that foster creativity and cultural expression. It’s encouraging to see Oman’s art scene increasingly gaining recognition—both nationally and internationally.”

Sheikha Al Riyami, another featured artist, offers viewers a glimpse into her recent workshop funded by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture. During this dedicated week, local watercolorists explored Oman’s varied landscapes—from the high peaks of Al Hajar to the gentle coastlines—each artist interpreting their environment through personal lenses. Her own focus was on Al Dakhiliyah’s ancient, wind-tuned houses, which she depicts as “inhabited memories”—structures alive with stories and history that transcend time. Her use of delicate color gradients and transparent washes invites viewers to shift from sweeping vistas to intimate details, fostering a dialogue between the audience and the scene.

Al Riyami underscores the importance of such exhibitions as vital platforms for artistic growth. “They allow emerging artists to learn from each other, share techniques, and deepen their understanding of Oman’s environment. It’s vital for nurturing a sense of pride and connection to our cultural and natural heritage,” she explains.

Adding an international dimension, Algerian artists Aziz Abdelhaq and Taher Sayed Ahmed bring fresh perspectives to the exhibition. Abdelhaq, visiting Oman for the first time, is impressed by the level of artistry displayed. “My expectations were high, but I was truly impressed by the professionalism and emotional depth of these works."

Sayed Ahmed echoes this sentiment, praising their technical mastery. “Watercolour remains one of the most demanding mediums—it requires precise control and sensitivity. The artists here demonstrate a strong command, which speaks to their dedication and skill.”

The organizers of “Oman’s Perspective” see this exhibition as a stepping stone for future artistic collaborations and initiatives. They envision more projects that promote environmental conservation through art, fostering dialogue between artists, ecologists, and policymakers. There are plans to expand the exhibition to other cities and to include interactive workshops that engage the public more directly with Oman’s landscapes and stories.
