

SALALAH: The Dhofar Khareef Traditional Weapons Shooting Championship concluded on Friday, organised by Dhofar Municipality in Raysut as part of the annual khareef season celebrations. The championship, a highlight of the cultural calendar, draws participants and spectators of all ages, promoting Oman’s rich heritage of traditional sports.
In the Saktoun Targets Competition, Mohammed bin Nasser al Qanouni won the general category, Said bin Khamis al Muqbali took the junior category, and Muslim bin Mohammed Jaboub topped the senior category. In the heavy rifle target competition, Said bin Ramis al Mahri secured first place, while the Al Murab team won the heavy rifle plate shooting event. Ittihad Musayyib B emerged victorious in the saktoun plate shooting, and Muslim bin Mohammed Jaboub also clinched the heavy rifle target competition with scope for seniors. In the Challenge Cup, Mohammed bin Ahmed al Maashani was the winner.
The award ceremony was graced by Salim bin Musallam Qatan, Vice-President of the State Council and sponsor of the event, who honoured all first-place winners for their remarkable achievements.
The championship, held over five days, saw participation from more than 2,048 shooters competing in six main events, including skeet target competitions (general, junior and senior categories), heavy rifle target shooting, heavy rifle and skeet shooting, and heavy rifle target competition with scope for seniors.
Through events like this, Dhofar Municipality continues to preserve cultural traditions while fostering intergenerational engagement in traditional sports. — ONA
