BARKA: Mundher al Balushi is a prominent figure in Oman’s horse racing scene, building a career that combines his role with the Royal Cavalry and the management of his own private stable. While horse breeding has long been part of his family’s heritage, Al Balushi went beyond tradition to secure his place among the nation’s leading trainers.
His achievements include first place in the Super Cup, third place in the His Majesty Sultan Haitham’s Race, and nine victories in total — five of them consecutive — a record that underlines his consistency and determination at the highest level.
Among his standout horses are RB Free Bird, Anwar, Humam Al Shahania, and Tawafuq Bainunah. Of these, RB Free Bird shone brightest last season, achieving top results and competing in the prestigious “Top One” race. The horse is now being prepared for the new season, which begins in October.
Al Balushi describes his training philosophy as one based on patience and harmony between trainer and horse, noting: “Horses recognise genuine commitment and give back on the track.”
As for preparations, he explained that his programme focuses on gradual fitness conditioning, starting with strength and endurance before building speed. He also emphasises careful selection of preparatory races to test readiness, supported by precise nutrition, veterinary care, and maintaining a calm environment for the horses.
Looking ahead, Al Balushi says his ultimate ambition is to achieve regional and international titles, proudly representing Oman abroad. “We have the horses and the expertise,” he says. “All we need are opportunities and support to raise the Sultanate of Oman’s name on the global stage.”
On the future of horse racing in Oman, he highlights the importance of hosting international races, providing stronger support for owners and trainers, and investing in locally bred horses capable of competing globally.
From humble beginnings to national acclaim, Al Balushi’s story proves that ambition and perseverance can turn dreams into lasting achievements.
