Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources(MAFWR) has announced the implementation of a ban on the fishing, trading, and handling of king fish (known locally as kanad) across all Omani coasts, starting Friday, 15 August.

The ban will remain in place for two months, concluding on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, in accordance with Ministerial Decision No. 230/2014.

The ministry called on all fishermen, fish transporters, fishing companies, and fishery institutions to refrain from catching, transporting, selling, or exporting king mackerel, or dealing in any of its products during the ban period.

It also emphasized the importance of registering any quantities of king mackerel available before the start of the ban with the relevant authorities to ensure compliance, as trading or exporting unregistered quantities during this period will be prohibited.

This measure aims to protect fish stocks, ensure the sustainability of the species, and safeguard the interests of the fishing sector in the long term. The ministry urged all concerned parties to cooperate fully in the public interest, stressing that legal action and penalties will be enforced against violators.
