Reimagining the future through green lens

In recent years, people have become increasingly aware of the dangers of climate change and global warming. As a result, they are prioritising the concept of sustainable living, which has led to a growing demand for eco-friendly homes.

Sustainable urban housing addresses these challenges by emphasising eco-friendly materials, energy efficiency and designs that promote community engagement.

From an ecological standpoint, sustainable building practices preserve natural resources and incorporate renewable energy options. Socially, they promote healthier living, reduce environmental impact and foster community well-being.

By improving indoor air quality, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals and fostering a connection with nature, these practices promote better physical and mental health. Additionally, they lower utility costs, increase property value and support a more sustainable lifestyle.

This shift in housing is more than just a trend; it signifies a move towards a sustainable future.

“Eco-friendly housing can enhance the health and well-being of residents by providing better indoor air quality, natural light and access to green spaces”, stresses the United Nations.

We know energy is a critical issue in the present era. Sadly, the current unplanned and uncontrolled growth of housing pays little attention to its conservation. At times, local authorities struggle to provide even the minimum required energy to all households.

Studies reveal that approximately 18 per cent of total global energy consumption occurs in the housing sector. It is essential to consider energy conservation techniques before, during and after construction, as significant energy savings can be achieved at each stage.

The Sultanate of Oman is one such country that is actively adopting sustainable housing practices, driven by factors such as population growth, the need for energy efficiency and the desire to reduce its carbon footprint.

In alignment with the sustainability goals of Oman Vision 2040, there is an increasing emphasis on implementing green building codes, utilising solar energy, optimising building orientation and incorporating thermal insulation in new constructions.

The country's commitment to renewable energy, green building standards and the revitalisation of traditional architecture represents promising progress. Its eco-friendly housing projects are redefining urban living in Oman by creating communities that address the increasing demand for sustainable lifestyles.

“The focus is on developing integrated residential neighbourhoods that address the needs of society, support environmental sustainability and improve quality of life. These initiatives help create a balance between urban, environmental and social development, thus ensuring a sustainable, prosperous society and realising the expectations of citizens and investors alike”, Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning said.

The government is setting structural plans in governorates and supervising implementation through real estate developer partners in this regard.

Sultan Haitham City, for example, represents the inaugural project in a broader initiative aimed at transforming urban development in the nation. Aligned with Oman Vision 2040, the nation’s long-term strategic framework, the initiative aims to host 100,000 people from Muscat’s expanding population, which includes citizens, expatriates and visitors.

Aiming for Oman’s 2050 objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, the new city is planned to reduce its environmental impact while improving residents' quality of life.

The Sustainable City — Yiti is another eco-friendly township emerging along the Sea of Oman coast close to Muscat that is set to be the largest functioning sustainable community in the area and Oman’s first net-zero emission community by 2040.

Covering almost one million square metres, this innovative project acts as a robust and adaptable blueprint for low-carbon lifestyles, effortlessly incorporating smart technologies to improve sustainability.

One thing is clear: Oman is on track to redefine urban living, thanks to a clear vision and unwavering commitment that not only transform urban life but also continue the legacy of progress and prosperity.
