Workers run between fields as they plant amber rice in a field in Iraq’s central holy city of Najaf. Iraq’s water resources ministry has said that ‘this year is one of the driest since 1933’, and that water reserve are down to only eight per cent of their full capacity. Water shortages have forced many farmers in Iraq to abandon their lands, and authorities have drastically curbed farming activity to preserve drinking water supplies. — AFP
