MUSCAT: The National Team for Improving Oman’s Performance in the Global Innovation Index (GII) held its 21st meeting, chaired by Dr Saif bin Abdullah al Haddabi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation for Research and Innovation; and Head of the National GII Team.
The meeting reviewed the outcomes and recommendations from the recent workshop on the simulation system for international indicators for policymakers in the Arab region, organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The team discussed the use of simulation tools and methodologies for analysing various indicators, aimed at identifying gaps and formulating strategic scenarios to enhance Oman’s performance in the Global Innovation Index.
Additionally, the team evaluated the progress of the medium-term strategic plan and discussed procedural steps to support the work of the policies and initiatives team, as well as the data management team.
The GII team is one of the national teams established under the National Competitiveness Committee. Its primary objective is to improve Oman’s standing in the Global Innovation Index through a unified national effort that actively engages stakeholders within the innovation ecosystem. This effort is conducted in collaboration with the Oman Vision 2040 Implementation Follow-up Unit, the National Centre for Statistics and Information; and other relevant entities.
The team regularly assesses innovation performance reports to identify strengths and weaknesses; and develops strategies aimed at boosting Oman’s ranking. These efforts include strengthening the national innovation system across areas such as infrastructure, digital transformation, education, research and development, intellectual property, business environment; and human capital development. It also fosters collaboration across key sectors to align innovation with sustainable development goals. — ONA
