MUSCAT, JULY 17

The Oman national wheelchair basketball team has qualified for the semifinals (Golden Square) of the West Asia Paralympic Clubs Championship, currently being held in Amman, Jordan, from July 13 to 19, 2025. The tournament is organised under the supervision of the Asian Wheelchair Basketball Federation and features participation from some of the strongest national teams and Paralympic clubs across West Asia.

Oman secured its place in the semifinals after a fiercely contested group stage, which ended with a three-way tie in points between Oman, Bahrain and Palestine. The tie-break was decided based on point difference, with Oman topping the group with a +10 point differential, followed by Bahrain at +3, and Palestine at -13. This earned the Omani team a well-deserved spot in the semifinals, where they are set to face the Kuwaiti team in a highly anticipated showdown.

Mohammed al Hinai, head of Oman’s delegation, stated that the team’s performance so far is a clear indicator of the development of Paralympic sports in Oman. He praised the players’ commitment and tactical discipline throughout the matches.

“The team gradually settled into the tournament environment and overcame early setbacks by conducting technical analyses after each match. We witnessed clear improvements following the first loss, with better tactical and physical execution in the second game, he said. Qualifying for the semifinals was not easy it required strategic calculations and intelligent teamwork, reflecting the team’s maturity and readiness to compete at higher levels."

Al Hinai added, we are proud of our players. This qualification is a major motivation for them to keep performing at their best. We have the full support of the Oman Paralympic Committee and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY). Our goal now is to make history by reaching the final. For his part, Younis al Toubi, one of the team’s standout players, expressed his joy at reaching the semifinals and emphasised that the team’s ambition now goes beyond just qualifying. We’re in the midst of a very competitive tournament, and every team is here to win. We struggled at the start, but every match taught us something new. We learned from our loss and improved both defensively and in our fast-paced offensive transitions. That’s how we made it to the final four, he said.

He added, Now we aim to reach the final. The Kuwaiti team is experienced, but we are ready for the challenge. We have a professional technical staff, committed players and strong determination. We’ll fight until the last moment to bring joy to the Omani fans.

The team continues its intensive preparations for the upcoming semifinal against Kuwait, with full focus and unity from all members of the delegation. The goal is clear: to achieve an honourable result and add a new milestone to the history of Omani Paralympic sports, reinforcing its status at both regional and continental levels.
