London: Having lost the first wicket on 13 with Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissed in only the second over of the innings, India had progressed to 44 for one at tea on the second day of the third Test, KL Rahul was 13 and Karun Nair on 18.
Returning after long absence through injury for his 14th Test, Jofra Archer had Jaiswal held at second slip from an excellent ball that moved away from Jaiswal taking the outside edge. The batsman had begun well with three fours in the opening over bowled by Chris woakes.
Earlier, resuming on the overnight score of 251 for four England lost quick wickets with Jasprit Bumrah producing an excellent spell of fast bowling. But not until Joe Root, unbeaten on 99 overnight, brought up his 37th Test century with a square cut for four off the first ball of the day bowled by Bumrah.
It was a shortish ball, a bit outside the off stump and Root was on to it in a flash. It was his eighth Test century at the HQ of cricket, more than any other player. Behind him are Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan each with six.
England then went on to lose three wickets, all to Bumrah, in a space of 11 runs. Ben Stokes, 39 overnight, added just 5 runs before having his off stump uprooted. The ball was angled into him and went through bat and pad in the fourth over of the day.
Root then went for 104 from 199 balls. He was bowled while playing a little late for his drive and getting a slight inside edge on to the middle stump.
The next ball accounted for Chris Woakes, whose golden duck was Bumrah’s 214th Test wicket. At that stage the bowler had four for 44 from 21 overs, the last three wickets coming in 13 balls and England were reduced to 271 for 7.
Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse combined to put on 84 in a fine stand for the eighth wicket which was vitally important for England at that stage. Smith reached his sixth Test half century passing 1,000 Test runs in his 13th Test.
Thirty two runs were added for the last two wickets. Jofra Archer was bowled by Bumrah for 4 with the ball coming in and keeping a shade low.
Finally, seventeen runs later on 387, England were dismissed with Carse bowled by Siraj after scoring his maiden Test half century. He had attempted to hit to leg a straight ball. It was a fine innings spanning just over two hours and facing 86 balls. Bumrah’s marvellous bowling brought him five for 54 from 27 overs.
