Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned the public against fraudulent individuals exploiting video communication platforms to impersonate official figures and government employees in a bid to deceive citizens and residents.
According to the advisory, scammers pose as police officers or government personnel during video calls, using fake visuals and names to create an illusion of authenticity. These individuals request sensitive personal or financial information, often under the pretext of verifying identities or legal matters, and may threaten their targets with fabricated legal consequences if they do not comply.
The ROP stressed the importance of verifying the identity of any caller through official channels before responding to such requests. It urged the public to remain vigilant and not to disclose personal details or documents without ensuring the legitimacy of the communication.
“Protecting your information is a shared responsibility,” the advisory stated, highlighting the growing sophistication of online fraud schemes targeting unsuspecting individuals.
The police reiterated its commitment to combatting cybercrime and urged anyone encountering suspicious calls or messages to report them immediately through official communication channels.
