Muscat: The Environment Authority has announced that rangers from the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve successfully rescued five tourists who were swept away by strong sea currents while swimming near one of the islands on Wednesday.
According to the Authority, the group was safely transported to the island's shoreline, where they waited until tourist boats could reach them. The incident prompted officials to renew calls for greater responsibility and vigilance by tourism operators, especially during swimming and snorkelling activities in marine reserves.
“The Environment Authority urges tourism companies to closely monitor visitors while they are swimming or snorkelling, and to avoid leaving them unattended in open waters,” a statement read. “This is essential to ensure their safety and prevent such dangerous situations.”
Located approximately 18 kilometres off the coast of Barka and 70 kilometres west of Muscat, the Daymaniyat Islands Nature Reserve is one of Oman’s most treasured marine conservation sites. The reserve is composed of nine small islands known for their vibrant coral reefs, sea turtles, whale sharks, and nesting seabirds, making it a popular destination for diving and ecotourism.
In recent years, the Environment Authority has strengthened conservation regulations at the site to protect its fragile biodiversity. However, the area’s offshore location and exposure to tidal currents can pose safety risks for swimmers and snorkellers unfamiliar with the conditions.
This latest rescue adds to a growing number of water-related emergencies reported in Oman this year. According to Royal Oman Police (ROP) figures released in May 2025, over 40 drowning incidents have been recorded across the Sultanate since the beginning of the year. Many of the cases occurred at beaches, wadis, and dams, particularly during weekends and holiday periods.
Authorities have repeatedly urged beachgoers and adventure seekers to heed warning signs, avoid restricted areas, and follow safety protocols issued by local and environmental agencies.
