Beating baggage blues between Muscat and Salalah

Weight loss is one of the most trending topics on the internet, as is travelling light on flights following policy changes by airlines.

These changes aim to prevent flights from overloading and to generate more revenue from passengers who are unable to avoid travelling light despite their best efforts.

With new baggage rules imposed by domestic flight operators between Muscat and Salalah, travellers are now faced with the choice of travelling light or paying extra fees. Some savvy travellers are choosing to travel light by booking a 'light' fare for the flight and sending the rest of their baggage through bus service. This allows them to carry the luggage they desire while saving a significant amount on fares.

Abdullah, a frequent traveller on the Salalah-Muscat-Salalah route, mentioned that although it is somewhat inconvenient to go to the bus station in Ruwi or Rusail, the cost savings make it worthwhile.

Managing in the Wilayat of Salalah is easier due to the short distance, with most bus operators located within a three-kilometre radius.

Both Oman Air and Salam Air, operating on this route, have adjusted their baggage policies to attract passengers travelling light and to increase revenue from those who must travel with heavier luggage. A travel agent confirmed the recent changes in Oman Air's baggage policy, noting that the base fare for 'light' passengers is now lower than that for 'heavy' passengers, offering a cost-effective option for frequent travellers.

Oman Air's 'Super Saver' baggage policy for Economy Class allows passengers to carry only one piece of cabin baggage weighing up to seven kilograms, with no check-in baggage permitted. This option is more affordable than others, such as the 'Comfort' and 'Flex' categories, which allow for larger checked baggage allowances.

Fare differences between these categories can vary from RO 61 to RO 87 or more, depending on demand and booking timing. Booking earlier typically results in lower fares, as prices tend to increase as the travel date approaches.

Previously, all Economy Class passengers were allowed one piece of cabin baggage weighing up to seven kilograms and checked baggage up to 30 kilogrammes.

Despite mixed reactions to the policy changes, they have sparked innovative travel habits among passengers.
