Muscat:The Sultanate of Oman marked a medical milestone by successfully performing its first-ever heart transplant.

The operation was carried out by an all-Omani medical team at the National Heart Centre in the Royal Hospital.

The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that the surgery was performed on an Omani patient suffering from chronic heart failure.

The five-hour procedure was led and supervised by Dr. Hilal bin Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health, who also took part in the surgery due to his expertise in heart operations.

Dr Hilal al Sabti said the achievement marks a major step forward for Oman’s healthcare system.

“This heart transplant was performed according to the highest medical and ethical standards and follows both national laws and international guidelines,” he said.

He added that the success reflects the strength of Oman’s healthcare vision and the skills of its medical professionals.

“It is a sign of how far we’ve come as a country and the importance of continuing to invest in our people.”

Dr Qassim bin Saleh al Abri, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at the Royal Hospital, said this is the first heart transplant done entirely by Omani hands and it’s the result of years of training and preparation.

Dr Alaa bin Hassan al Lawati also praised the teamwork behind the surgery. “Such a complex operation needs cooperation from many medical specialists. Everyone involved showed great skill and dedication.”

The Ministry of Health said this achievement is part of ongoing efforts to improve organ transplant services.
