The Sultanate of Oman secured one gold and two silver medals at the conclusion of its participation in the 50th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2025, which saw global representation from over 45 countries and more than 1,200 inventors and innovators.
Innovator Muayid Samir Al Balushi claimed the gold medal for his invention 'Etienne - SOS Rescue Device,' a pioneering maritime safety device that sends distress signals to fishermen via satellite and radio waves.
Meanwhile, Mahmood Mohammed Al Hinai was awarded a silver medal for his 'Air Conditioner Sterilisation and Cleaning System,' while Layyan Said Al Rahbi also received a silver medal for her invention 'Lugha' (Language), designed to assist the deaf and mute in communicating with society.
Ibrahim Ahmed Al Balushi, Head of Oman’s delegation at the exhibition, emphasized that this marked the country’s first participation under the auspices of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation.
He highlighted the ministry’s commitment to supporting individual innovations and providing real opportunities for Omani inventors to compete on international platforms, showcase their projects to investors and entrepreneurs, and connect with global innovators.
Muayid Samir's winning invention, Etian, is a cutting-edge smart device designed to enhance marine safety and rescue operations. The device enables distress calls and accurately pinpoints users’ locations in emergencies, even under harsh marine conditions and in areas with little to no network coverage. It is particularly aimed at safeguarding fishermen and maritime workers, ensuring timely and effective rescue efforts.
Reflecting on his achievement, Al Balushi described the experience as 'extraordinary and enriching,' noting that he qualified for the Geneva event after winning a national competition organised by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. He expressed his gratitude to the 'Masarij' team, his family and university professors for their support throughout the journey.
Dr Hilal bin Ali al Maqbali, Deputy of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Electronic Systems and Student Services at the university’s Sohar branch, remarked, “This global achievement reflects the innovation potential of our students and the university’s commitment to excellence in inventions and sustainability.”
Al Balushi’s triumph marks not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Oman’s advancement in technological innovation and humanitarian-driven solutions.
