MUSCAT: The Association for Children with Disabilities at Al Athaiba Rehabilitation Centre organised a series of special activities for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to commemorate World Autism Awareness Day, which is observed on April 2 each year. The event was held under the theme ‘Promoting Neurodiversity and Sustainable Development Goals'.

Saliha al Masoudi, Director of Al Athaiba Rehabilitation Centre, highlighted that the event aimed to promote the integration of children with autism spectrum disorders into society, emphasising the need for supportive and enriching environments for both the children and their families. She noted that such events are an expression of the spirit of community and human solidarity, reinforcing the commitment to neurodiversity and inclusivity.

The event featured a diverse and carefully curated programme designed to support the development of children with ASD. This included a range of educational, recreational and sports activities that were tailored to meet the specific needs of the children, offering both fun and learning experiences. The activities aimed to enhance their cognitive, perceptual and social skills, allowing them to engage meaningfully with their peers and families.

Interactive corners, such as a drawing and colouring corner, an educational games corner using interactive screens and a sports corner, were set up to cater to the varied interests of the children. The event provided an opportunity for families to actively participate alongside their children, further promoting inclusivity and understanding. Over the years, the association has made significant strides in developing programmes and services that empower children with ASD, fostering their independence and integrating them with their neurotypical peers. - ONA
