PARIS: The Sultanate of Oman has participated in the 221st session of Unesco's Executive Board, currently being held at the organisation's headquarters in Paris and continues till April 17. Ambassador Amina bint Salim al Balushiyah, Oman's Permanent Delegate to Unesco, led the Omani delegation.

In her address, she expressed Oman's appreciation for Unesco's successful implementation of various programmes despite global challenges. She called on the organisation to continue supporting nations facing crises and emergencies, particularly Arab countries experiencing critical humanitarian situations, including the Gaza Strip in Palestine, as well as Lebanon and Yemen.

The ambassador strongly condemned Israel's ongoing aggression against Gaza, including the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians and vital infrastructure such as educational and relief facilities. She also conveyed Oman's solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand following the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar.

She emphasised the urgent need to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4 on quality education. She advocated for including a dedicated culture goal in the post-2030 agenda and intensifying efforts to mitigate climate change impacts while promoting environmental and green education.

Oman has taken concrete steps in collaboration with Unesco's Natural Sciences Sector, including the registration of a geopark and two nature reserves to preserve biodiversity and protect natural heritage, the ambassador noted.

She commended Unesco's efforts in supporting member states to safeguard cultural heritage and promote peacebuilding and intercultural dialogue. In this context, she highlighted Oman's "Ship of Omani Youth" initiative for sustainable peace and cultural dialogue. Recognised by Unesco as a best practice in intangible cultural heritage preservation, the ship will embark in May on a voyage spanning over 23 cities across Asia, Europe and Africa to promote coexistence and peace among nations. - ONA
