MUSCAT: Renowned Omani novelist Sharifa al Toobi has released 'The Wind Blows', the final part of her historical trilogy that began with Wadi Neighbourhood (2021) and Mountain Mountain (2022). Rich in oral heritage and untold stories, the novel explores Oman’s transformation from imamate rule to the modern sultanate.

Published by Al An Publishers in Jordan, the 600-page novel draws from Al Toobi’s personal memories and stories passed down from her grandfather. “I was writing the book I wanted to read,” she said, highlighting her effort to preserve overlooked aspects of Omani history.

The trilogy chronicles pivotal events, from resistance to colonialism to the ideological shifts of the 1960s and ’70s. In 'The Wind Blows', protagonist Hammoud travels to Egypt, where he embraces revolutionary ideas, while his bride Nafafa waits in their hometown. The novel also introduces strong female figures like Awida and Tofoul, who challenge societal norms.

Al Toobi blends fact and fiction to spotlight the emotional and political journeys of ordinary Omanis, culminating in a message of hope and renewal inspired by the words of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. —ONA
