MUSCAT: Shannah and Masirah ports saw a notable surge in maritime activity during the Eid Al Fitr holidays, with many visitors travelling to the island.

The Directorate-General of Maritime Affairs in Al Wusta Governorate oversaw a safe maritime environment during this period, closely supervising operations at the two ports. This included ferry services operated by both Mwasalat and several private operators.

As ferries remain the primary link connecting Masirah Island to the mainland, many residents and businesses have voiced the need for a bridge to better serve both citizens and the growing local tourism sector. They highlighted the challenges of relying on ferries that can take over an hour for travel, with some services occasionally being cancelled at the last minute.

In an earlier report, the Observer discussed the importance of improved transport connectivity to unlock the full potential of Masirah Island, which is located off the southeastern coast of Oman. As the largest island in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, Masirah is currently connected to the rest of the country via ferry services, including private vehicle transport to Shannah Port. There is also a daily bus service from Muscat to Shannah, alongside weekly flights between Muscat and Masirah.

Speaking to the Observer, Abdullah bin Abdullah bin Abdulwali Baowain, Wali of Masirah, shared that the island has been attracting a significant number of both foreign and domestic tourists, particularly during the summer months when the island’s popular activities such as kitesurfing draw in visitors.

He also mentioned that a recent tender was awarded for the construction of a multipurpose port on Masirah, valued at over RO 28 million. This project, which will extend the existing port, includes the development of main and secondary breakwaters, fixed docks, floating moorings and modern facilities. These improvements aim to enhance marine operations, boost fish production and optimise marine transport. Additionally, the project will facilitate the use of larger vessels, reducing current sea travel times.

In a related development, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued tenders for site selection, master planning, design and supervision for the development of an airport in Masirah, which would further improve accessibility to the island.
