While travelling virtually on Google Earth from the comfort of my home, I stumbled upon a captivating canyon that piqued my curiosity. Nestled near the Al Sifawi resort, roughly an hour’s drive from Muscat, this intriguing canyon begins at the last village accessible by car, beckoning adventurers to explore its depths. Eager to uncover its secrets, I embarked on three trips to prepare for my descent into Wadi Al Zaatar.
My first expedition was particularly memorable, as I was joined by my wife. Together, we tackled the challenging terrain, making our way to the canyon's entrance set within the mountains. The hike was no easy feat; it took us about two hours to reach the end of the lower section of the canyon, with steep ascents testing our endurance. However, the effort proved worthwhile, rewarding us with breathtaking views that made every step count. During this initial trip, we studied the canyon floor and reached the point where we would begin our ascent to the mountain's top in our future endeavours.
Mountain climbing is emerging as one of the most exhilarating adventures available, captivating enthusiasts around the world with its unique blend of physical and mental challenges. This dynamic sport has seen a surge in popularity, evolving into a global trend that attracts climbers of all levels.
In an increasingly fast-paced world, many seek escape through outdoor activities. Mountain climbing allows individuals to disconnect from daily stressors, embracing the freedom and serenity found in remote mountainous regions.
The sport also promotes camaraderie and teamwork. Climbing often brings individuals together, strengthening bonds and creating lasting friendships among those who share a passion for adventure.
The rise of social media platforms has played a pivotal role in popularizing mountain climbing. With climbers sharing their experiences and inspiring others, more people are drawn to take up the sport. Furthermore, advancements in climbing gear and technology have made the activity more accessible, welcoming both beginners and seasoned adventurers.
On my second trip, I was accompanied by my son-in-law, Francis. This time, I planned to reach the mountain’s summit from where we would commence our first abseil. The weather that day was scorching, and Francis opted to stop midway in the shade of a substantial boulder while I continued the ascent. Driven by the thrill of what lay ahead, I persevered and reached my destination, feeling invigorated by my progress.
With each journey, my excitement about the canyon's potential for exploration grew. We retraced our steps to the mountain’s summit, where the anticipation of our next adventure fuelled our determination.
Finally, the third trip was the culmination of our efforts. I teamed up with my friend Ahmed and a French couple, Gilles and Marion, to officially open the canyon. We loaded our climbing gear—harnesses, ropes, drills, and anchors—into our heavy bags and set off early in the morning. After a grueling three-and-a-half-hour hike, we arrived at the start of our descent, adrenaline coursing through our veins.
Standing atop the mountain, the view was nothing short of spectacular. From an altitude of around 600 metres, we gazed out at the stunning coastline, a vivid reminder of the beauty Oman has to offer. With our hearts racing, we prepared for the descent, which involved abseiling down five drops, the longest being an exhilarating 40 metres.
Once we reached the wadi bed, we paused to catch our breath, savouring a well-deserved drink and snack. A sense of accomplishment washed over us as we reflected on our journey. Exhausted yet elated, we made our way back to the car, knowing we had opened a new chapter in our adventure through the magnificent landscapes of Oman.
This experience deepened my appreciation for the natural world and reinforced the bonds of friendship and family. Wadi Al Zaatar is now etched in my memory as a testament to the thrill of exploration and the beauty that lies just beyond the horizon. The last time I ventured to Wadi Al Zaatar was in November 2018, alongside Mihai, my “adopted son.” Each visit has left an indelible mark on my heart, reminding me of the wonders that await those willing to seek them out.
