The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued a warning about the potential hazards of open shuwa pits and barbecue grill fires, which are common during festival seasons as part of Eid traditions.
The ROP is urging adults to follow safety guidelines and to keep children away from the fire in shuwa pits. A senior official from the ROP Media Department emphasised the importance of prioritising safety, especially for children who are more susceptible to accidents.
When preparing shuwa or barbecue, it is important to choose a location away from children's reach. Avoid using quick igniters that children could access and ensure that kids are kept at a safe distance. After use, remember to cover the barbecue pits immediately.
Incidents involving children and barbecue pits have been reported in the past, such as a tragic case in the
Wilayat of Al Suwaiq last year where a boy fell into a pit and died.
The Civil Defence and Ambulances Authority (CDAA) has also stressed the importance of safety measures when using open barbecue pits and shuwa. They recommend properly covering these pits to prevent harm to children and animals.
The authorities have also cautioned against swimming or playing near waterfalls in addition to being aware of road accidents.
