

The Natural History Museum in Muscat will be shifted from its current location to the upcoming Oman Botanic Garden, the Minister of Heritage and Tourism said on Monday.
The museum brings Oman’s natural world to life through interactive displays and complete collections. Visitors can trace the journey from ancient geological formations to modern ecosystems.
Scientific teams, universities, and research institutions benefit greatly from its resources. The museum’s well-equipped learning centers and specialized workshops make it special, helping preserve and promote Oman’s natural heritage for future generations.
The Natural History Museum is located was opened on 30 December 1985 and shows the Omani environment diversity through offers of terrain, geology, plants, insects, wild animals, and marine life. Despite the small size of the Museum but abounds of facts dealing with the biodiversity of the Sultanate of Oman. The Museum features stuffed animals rarely found in the wilds of types and species living in the land of Oman, skeletons of marine organisms, birds, and reptiles that lived in the Omani environment and died naturally.
Some of the rare displays exhibited in this museum are traces of tree fossils found in Al Huquf dating back more than 260 million years, in addition to the remains of coral fossils dating back over 270 million years found in Wadi AsSahtan in Rustaq. Also found were remnants of jaw teeth belonging to a specific type of monkey, as well as the teeth of prehistoric animals dating back between 15 and 35 million years.
The Museum of Natural History also has the whale hall that displays skeletons, bones and skulls of whales. The importance of this hall lies in identifying the different types and sizes of whales that live in the depths of the sea.
