Muscat: The Silal Central Fruit and Vegetable Market made a statement on the circulation of some quantities of spoiled watermelons and cantaloupes in the market.
The market said it always confirms the safety and quality of the products and the quantities of disposed products did not contain any chemical residues or substances that pose a risk to consumer health.
The damage was due to long-distance transportation conditions exceeding 1000 kilometers, which affected the quality of the products.
All imports into the market are inspected through a robust control system under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, which monitors and inspects any chemical residues and takes necessary official action when necessary.
In cooperation with Barka Municipality, damaged goods were disposed of at Bee'ah's landfill to ensure they were not reused for sale, storage, or delivery to consumers.
Silal urged everyone to support Omani farmers and local products.
The market has been witnessing a steady flow of produce amid tight controls to prevent any unjustified price increases and the market is expected to witness increased commercial activity during the final days of Ramadan, given the increased demand for fruits and vegetables in preparation for the Eid season.
The market imports directly from countries of origin, resulting in the entry of 639 trucks carrying 15,981 tons of vegetables and fruits during the period from March 1 to 16.
