Doha: Hamad International Airport (DOH), recognized as the world’s best airport by Skytrax in 2024, has officially opened its new Concourses D and E, significantly increasing its annual passenger capacity to over 65 million. The expansion strengthens Doha’s position as a key global aviation hub, enhancing connectivity and operational efficiency ahead of the peak travel season.
The project, completed ahead of schedule, marks the final phase of the airport’s expansion, which commenced in 2018. It follows the unveiling of the ORCHARD in 2022, a 6,000-square-meter indoor tropical garden designed to redefine the passenger experience. With this latest development, Hamad International Airport now spans 842,000 square meters—14% larger than before—while the addition of 17 new aircraft contact gates brings the total to 62. This increase of nearly 40% significantly improves connectivity, streamlines operations, and reduces the need for bus transfers, enhancing overall efficiency.

Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr Badr Mohammed al-Meer, highlighted the strategic importance of the expansion, stating: “Hamad International Airport is more than a gateway; it is a vital pillar of Qatar’s economic growth and global connectivity. The completion of this project, which I have been personally involved with since 2018, is a testament to our commitment to operational excellence and strategic planning. While many global airports have faced delays in their expansion plans, we are proud to have delivered this project ahead of schedule. This achievement not only increases capacity but also strengthens the entire Qatar Airways network, enhances resilience, and supports the broader objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030.”
Hamad Ali al Khater, Chief Operating Officer at Hamad International Airport, emphasized the operational benefits of the new concourses. “Our focus is on delivering excellence that meets both current demands and future growth. The opening of Concourses D and E is a major step in expanding capacity and optimizing efficiency. This development enhances passenger flow, strengthens airline connectivity, and ensures a smoother and more seamless travel experience.”
The newly inaugurated Concourses D and E introduce several enhancements designed to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency.
A major highlight is the introduction of cutting-edge self-boarding technology, allowing passengers to board efficiently through automated document verification systems. This significantly reduces wait times and streamlines the boarding process, ensuring a faster and more seamless transition from terminal to aircraft.
The expansion also enhances global connectivity, enabling the airport to accommodate a greater number of international airlines and direct routes to key destinations. With increased gate capacity and optimized flight operations, Hamad International Airport is well-positioned to strengthen its role as a global transit hub.
To further elevate the passenger experience, the new concourses feature expanded retail and dining options, including over 10 new Qatar Duty Free outlets and food and beverage venues. This addition increases the airport’s retail space by 2,700 square meters, reinforcing its status as a world-class shopping and dining destination. Passengers will also benefit from upgraded seating designed for maximum comfort and convenience.
Sustainability remains a key priority, with the new concourses designed to meet GSAS 4-Star Design & Build Certification and targeting LEED Gold Certification. The development incorporates energy-efficient systems, innovative water management solutions, and advanced climate control technologies, aligning with global sustainability objectives.
Additionally, the expansion prioritizes accessibility, incorporating universal design principles to ensure a seamless experience for all travelers. Features such as barrier-free pathways, spacious seating areas, hearing loops, and dedicated assistance services highlight Hamad International Airport’s commitment to inclusivity and passenger comfort.
The opening of Concourses D and E marks the final phase of Hamad International Airport’s broader expansion strategy, which has introduced several landmark developments. The ORCHARD, a lush indoor tropical garden, has become a signature feature of the airport, offering a tranquil setting for travelers. The Central Concourse has been expanded to improve passenger flow, while an enhanced retail and dining portfolio now includes a wider range of luxury brands and global culinary options.
With these latest developments, Hamad International Airport continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of air travel in the region. The expansion not only enhances Qatar’s aviation infrastructure but also reinforces its status as a leading international gateway.
