Muscat: The Ministry of Health has launched a national project to screen for diabetic retinopathy using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, aiming to enhance early detection and improve eye care for diabetic patients across the Sultanate of Oman.
The initiative seeks to address the growing challenges faced by diabetic patients in Oman, as diabetic retinopathy remains one of the most serious complications of diabetes, potentially leading to vision loss if left undiagnosed.
The primary objective of the project is to establish a national framework for the early detection and management of diabetic retinopathy. It also aims to reduce cases of vision impairment and preventable blindness while ensuring high-quality eye care services for patients.
According to the ministry, the project operates through 25 healthcare institutions equipped with advanced retinal imaging devices across all governorates of Oman. The screening programme targets all individuals diagnosed with diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2.
Meanwhile, the ministry plans to expand the project by introducing additional screening programmes, including tests for glaucoma and moderate myopia.
There are also plans to establish observation clinics for ongoing patient monitoring.
The initiative further aims to enhance telemedicine projects by connecting diagnostic devices to reduce the burden on specialised medical facilities and to develop a locally trained AI model based on Omani data.
