Ramadhan, the sacred month of fasting and spiritual reflection, is a period eagerly anticipated by Muslims worldwide. It begins with the sighting of the crescent moon, heralding a month filled with deep faith, community spirit, and the comforting warmth of family reunions. In Oman, where over 245,000 students are enrolled in schools, universities, and colleges, this month holds profound significance. Among these, around 150,000 students attend higher education institutions, often finding themselves away from their families during this sacred time, facing unique challenges and experiences.

For many students, the essence of Ramadhan is steeped in familial traditions. Athar AlNabii, a dedicated student at Sultan Qaboos University, candidly shares her struggles. “The weight of being away from my family during Ramadhan is heavy on my heart,” she admits. “Every moment on campus feels like a piece of me is missing, a longing that intensifies during this blessed month.” Traditionally, Athar’s family gathers at her grandparents' home to welcome Ramadhan, a cherished event she finds impossible to recreate in her university life.

The tranquil nights of Ramadhan awaken a special spirit on campus. With every sunset, students gather in communal spaces, transforming their environment into a haven of warmth and spirituality. “A palpable sense of peace wraps around the campus as the sun sets. The gentle breeze carries the recitations of the Quran, connecting us to something greater,” Athar observes, highlighting the enchantment present even away from home.

Amidst the struggles, the university goes to great lengths to support its students. Sultan Qaboos University actively fosters a sense of community, ensuring that even those far from their families can engage in meaningful experiences. The institution transcends mere academics by organising iftar gatherings, Quran recitation sessions, and providing designated prayer spaces for Taraweeh prayers, creating an atmosphere of unity amid diversity.

Athar often finds solace in shared moments with her peers, preparing iftar together, and reflecting on their journeys. “My friend and I gather to prepare our iftar, sharing the meal before heading to the girls' prayer hall for Taraweeh,” she says, illustrating the vibrant life pulsing through the campus during Ramadhan.

Dr. Rayya Al Manthari, the Dean of Student Affairs, understands the emotional landscape of these students and endeavours to bridge the gap of separation from family. This year, she has initiated a second series of communal iftar gatherings, inviting female students and staff to partake in these heartwarming meals, fostering connections and conversations that resonate with the spirit of Ramadhan.

In these gatherings, laughter is abundant, and discussions flow freely, where students share their dreams, challenges, and aspirations in an atmosphere reminiscent of family dinners. These moments not only fulfill their spiritual needs but also cultivate an unbreakable bond among students, fostering resilience and promoting a sense of belonging in the heart of Oman’s academic landscape during Ramadhan.

As Oman's campuses transform with the spirit of Ramadhan, it is not just a time of fasting but a period of community, connection, and compassion. For students like Athar, who navigate the complexities of being away from home, finding a “home away from home” during this holy month is a cherished experience that reinforces their faith and enhances their academic and personal growth, reminding them of the significance of togetherness, even in the most challenging times.
