MUSCAT: The Tely-Mahe Cup football tournament will take place on March 13 and 14 at the Al Shaadi Football Field in Al Maabela, near the Mall of Muscat.

Matches will start at 9 pm and continue until 2 am on both days.

Clubs representing Mahi and Thalassery in South India are vying for honours in the two-day tournament.

The neighbouring towns — which are part of different states, Thalassery with Kerala and Mahi with Pondicherry — shares a deep historical and cultural connection that has only grown stronger over time.

Although these two towns were governed separately, their bond has remained unbreakable.

Whether in their cuisine, wedding traditions, or local customs, the similarities between Mahi and Thalassery are remarkable. Over the years, the relationship between old families in both towns has flourished and the unity between these twin towns continues to thrive.

Even today, though the towns belong to different states, their connections are only growing stronger.

Even within the expatriate community in Gulf countries, the ties between these towns remain evident. Numerous clubs have been formed to represent both Mahi and Thalassery, uniting people to celebrate their shared heritage.

Among the expatriates in Oman, some have lived here for over 40 years and now, the children of these long-time expatriates are taking steps to form a club called Mahe United, which will represent Mahi at the Tely-Mahe Cup tournament on March 13 and 14 at the football turf near the Mall of Muscat.

The club’s logo and jerseys were launched by veterans such as Abdul Rahim, Ashraf, Anwer, Firos, Iqbal and Shanawas.

The goal is to bring all Mahi members together under one platform, offering support for their cultural and sporting activities without any bias.

Sports are a powerful tool for unity and teamwork and they play a vital role in steering young minds away from drugs and other social issues.

Promoting sports is a shared responsibility and the Mahe expatriates are committed to this cause.
