As many as 2,000 people comprising both Omanis and expatriates came and sat together for one of the largest Iftars happening in the these days, at the Muttrah Souq premises on Monday.
"We marked a great milestone in our annual Iftar spree which happens on all thirty days. But the Monday Iftar saw people from various walks of life sitting shoulder to shoulder for breaking their fast," said Navas Kasargode, chief coordinator of the mega Iftar.
During the thirty days of the holy month of Ramadhan, social Iftar gatherings happen at different public places, inside Iftar tents and business compounds besides mosques as part of Iftar en masse with the onset of the holy month.
Held at the Baladiya parking area, the mega social Iftar has proved to be a great initiative to keep all segments of the society closely knit. The daily Iftar has been helpful to the travellers and workers who find it difficult to reach home in time for breaking fast.
It is a usual sight in the Sultanate of Oman where people gather for Iftar in a daily basis since the beginning of the holy month.
While the Iftar kits, comprising dates, fruits and laban, was supplied by the workers of the souq, the Suhoor food, a major food comprising biriyani and other dinner varieties, is supplied by an NGO which hosts daily Iftar en masse.
"For many years now, we have been catering to hundreds of passersby everyday with dates, water, juice, laban and the like. All these are possible with the support of the traders and other small scale vendors inside the souq," added Navas.
The number of guests to these Iftars is increasing as well as the amount of food packets and fruits brought in by people.
