It will always be seen as the day the fog lifted, the gloves came off, preconceived illusions as to the strength and resilience of the so often quoted constitution and the true nature of the American socio-political machine was laid bare for the world to see.
It was the day, to be honest, most of us who have ‘been around for a while,’ never thought we would see, as only those who are extraordinarily naïve would believe that politically, what we see is what we get. We mostly know and understand, that governance, power, rule, in whatever name, needs those working in the shadows, in the dark, doing whatever needs to be done to achieve the ‘right’ ends.
However, I think few of us ever thought that we would see such a brazen, calculated attack upon an ally, as that perpetuated in America’s once hallowed, now irrevocably tarnished, Oval Office last week. Will this one day come back to haunt the Americans in the same way Hitler’s reversal of good relations with Stalin saw his lofty ambitions fall against the stubborn resistance of Stalingrad? Sometimes history has veiled warnings for us.
Unfortunately, I feel this bullying’s consequences will now be with us all forever and that what fragile trust may have been garnered in terms of politics and politicians, they now lie in shreds. Inviting Zelensky into their lair upon the pretence of meaningful discussions and peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian conflict, it was much more like a ‘bear-baiting’ session at the colosseum, with Zelensky the bear... blindfolded, hamstrung, caught completely unawares by the coordinated wolves, not only Trump and Vance, but those nameless sycophantic ‘suits’ that filled the room, like those audiences of old, baying, albeit silently, for blood.
Incredibly however, it has been the faux political growth, the elevation and emergence, of Elon Musk that has become an even less palatable unfolding soap opera, as the ‘Dark Star,’ of business and commerce enforces a ‘smash and grab’ on America, with a brutal, even vengeful attack on the nation’s public and civil services and military. If this wasn’t happening for real... it would have made a fascinating though horrific mini-series.
Musk is, no doubt, a phenomenon. According to Forbes Magazine, he is the richest man in the world, with a wealth of $353 billion and a charitable foundation of circa $9 billion. He is also, CEO and Chief Engineer of SpaceX; CEO and Architect of Tesla Inc; and Co-founder of OpenAI, Neuralink and the Boring Company. He owns ‘X’, formerly Twitter and was recently appointed Head of the Department of Government Efficiencies, or DOGE, his imprint looming large over national governance in both style and substance.
Maybe he hasn’t designed Tesla, or the ‘reusable’ SpaceX rockets, but he has contributed towards them. He has effectively re-written the nature of mega-scale lending and borrowing and in doing so, taxation... or not... effectively reshaping global financing to ensure that taxation, for the 1 per cent, is now merely an inconvenience, rather than an imposition. He must be to business today what 1800s door-to-door hucksters were, what insurance salesmen of the 60s and timeshare salesmen of the 80s and 90s were, both a shot in the arm and a rampant liability.
While some men though, want to rule the world, he has other fish to fry. He wants to own it. Insulated by his personal wealth, which will certainly be enhanced through now being the poacher with the keys to the estate, he will push and pull America’s society until it is out on its feet, and then, probably bored, he will find some other game to play. Why? Because he can. Who will blink first? Will, or can Trump live in Musk’s shadow? This will surely be seen in time, as the most incredible social experiment ever, and like watching a tragedy unfold, Musk’s ‘hire and fire’ antics, though deeply unpleasant, also make watching from afar, unmissable!
