Muscat: The General Department of Criminal Investigations and Research has been monitoring fraudulent advertisements circulating on social media. These ads offer domestic workers at attractive prices, with the intention of withdrawing money from victims’ accounts through the electronic links provided in the ads.
Social media platforms have become a fertile ground for fraudulent advertisements, taking advantage of the large user base and legitimate services. Despite efforts to limit these activities, they continue to increase.
Fraudsters use various methods to profit and deceive people, especially during Ramadhan when the demand increases. They use social media sites to promote cheap prices and attract victims.
Some fraudsters have started sending tweets, text messages, and publishing contact numbers, impersonating companies that provide domestic workers. They go as far as sending photos and CVs of supposed multinational workers, asking for money in exchange for contracts and workers. However, they never deliver on their promises and disappear with the money. The Royal Oman Police advises everyone not to respond to fake advertisements, avoid opening unknown electronic links, and refrain from disclosing personal and banking information on social media platforms.
