MUSCAT: Just as Dhofar attracts visitors during the khareef season, Masirah Island has the potential to become a premier year-round tourism destination in Oman.

Speaking to the Observer, Abdulhamid bin Ali al Abri, Deputy Wali of Masirah, highlighted the island’s unique summer winds, which create a climate similar to, if not better than, Dhofar’s during the monsoon months. While temperatures from January to March remain pleasant, the absence of wind makes the climate comparable to Muscat.

The island’s strong winds during summer make it an ideal hub for kiteboarding, kitesurfing competitions, and jet skiing, attracting adventure enthusiasts from Oman and across the region. To capitalise on this, the Governorate of Al Sharqiyah South is planning to host major tourism events through a dedicated company, aiming to offer an escape from bustling city life.

A key boost to Masirah’s accessibility is the proposed civilian airport project, which will enhance connectivity not only within Oman but also to regional destinations like Kuwait and Qatar.

According to Mansoor al Majaly of Masirah Beach Camp, the island offers rich tourism potential while preserving local traditions, culture, and privacy. His camp, located away from the city centre, has been attracting domestic and international tourists throughout the year.

Currently, Masirah hosts eight to ten hotel apartments, along with chalets and camps spread across the island. Other natural attractions include pristine springs and a black turtle sanctuary, home to a species distinct from the green turtles of Ras Al Jinz.

With its diverse offerings, adventure sports opportunities, and upcoming infrastructure developments, Masirah is poised to emerge as a sought-after year-round destination for travellers seeking both thrill and tranquillity.
