The holy month of Ramadhan is a special gift from the Almighty, a time of mercy and blessings. The Religious Teachings Department at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque reminds us that this month serves as a period of healing—arriving precisely when we need it most. When our souls and hearts feel shattered and our physical and spiritual health is compromised, some of us may find ourselves on the brink of giving up. At such times, Ramadhan comes as a divine cure, offering healing and renewed hope to those who are broken and suffering.
How is Ramadhan a Source of Healing?
Ramadhan provides healing in various ways, but let us specifically consider it as the month of the Holy Qur'an.
Ramadhan is not merely a month of fasting; it is also the month in which the Qur'an was revealed, as Allah states:
"شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ"
Translation: “Ramadhan is the month in which the Qur'an was revealed” (Qur'an 2:185).
This connection to the Qur'an makes Ramadhan an even more precious gift from Allah. Our relationship with the Qur'an is profound; nothing surpasses the words of Allah in their power to heal the soul. The Qur'an cures and mends whatever resides in our hearts, as Allah describes it:
"وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ"
Translation: “We send down the Qur'an as a healing and mercy for the believers” (Qur'an 17:82).
What better remedy could we find than the words of Allah? When we are physically unwell, we seek the best doctors and follow their prescribed treatments. In the same vein, when our hearts and souls are afflicted, who better to heal us than Allah Himself? And what could serve as a more perfect remedy than the Qur'an?
While physical ailments may be treated with worldly medications, the sickness of hearts and souls demands divine intervention. The Qur'an is the ultimate medicine, providing complete healing for our spiritual and physical well-being.
Did Allah not say that it is in His remembrance that hearts find tranquillity?
"الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ"
Translation: “Those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of God. Surely, it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find comfort” (Qur'an 13:28).
Reading the Qur'an is akin to Allah speaking directly to us. Whenever you feel isolated, overwhelmed by negativity, or yearn for peace, the Qur'an is the answer. Indeed, it is through the remembrance of Allah that our hearts find serenity.
Ramadhan is truly the month of the Qur'an, making it the ideal opportunity for us to connect deeply with this sacred text. Let us utilise this blessed month to allow our souls to heal and begin anew, insha'Allah.
Have you ever noticed why we feel happier during Ramadhan, with our hearts and souls more at ease? It is because, during this month, we tend to fulfil our true purpose in this life—to worship Him:
"وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنْسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ"
Translation: “I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me” (51:56).
When we stray from our true purpose, our hearts and souls begin to suffer. That is when we find ourselves in need of divine intervention, and Allah sends us the blessed month of the Qur'an, filled with hopes, mercy, blessings, and healing, alhamdulillah.
Let us begin our healing journey now, even before Ramadhan arrives. By incorporating the Qur'an into our daily lives, we can experience healing and grow stronger, both spiritually and physically. The burdens that weigh us down will be lifted, guiding our hearts toward peace.
There is no better time than Ramadhan to let the words of the Qur'an resonate within us and bring solace to our souls, for it was in this month that the Qur'an was revealed.
O Allah, let us witness the month of Ramadhan and guide us to make the most of it. O Turner of hearts, keep our hearts steadfast in Your faith.
Let us initiate this healing process now.
