The imperative of technological innovation, regulatory frameworks and adaptive business models in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries was highlighted at a key session held as part of the Oman Climate Week Main Strategic Conference on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. Taking part in the session, Faiza al Harthy, Head of Energy & Water Policy at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), outlined strategies to bridge the gap between industrial operations and sustainability targets.

“Decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors necessitates a fusion of technological advancements, regulatory evolution and novel business approaches. By prioritising innovation, collaboration and strategic foresight, industries can dismantle barriers and advance towards a low-carbon future,” Al Harthy said.

Industries heavily reliant on energy-intensive and carbon-heavy processes face complex technical, economic and operational constraints in reducing their emissions. The panel discussion explored strategic interventions, policy levers and scalable solutions, spotlighting successful global case studies.

Al Harthy also emphasised the vital role of cross-sector collaboration in achieving meaningful climate action.

“Sustained investment in research and development, alongside coordinated efforts among industries, governments and stakeholders, is fundamental to overcoming the structural challenges in hard-to-abate sectors, particularly in oil and gas. While the transition is intricate, it remains indispensable for advancing global climate commitments and ensuring the long-term resilience of the energy sector,” she noted.

Oman Climate Week, held under the auspices of the Environment Authority, serves as a pivotal forum for policy dialogue and industry engagement, aligning the Sultanate of Oman’s decarbonisation and energy transition efforts with global sustainability objectives. The conference convenes policymakers, industry leaders and climate experts to drive actionable solutions in the fight against climate change.
