Shura approves draft laws

Muscat: The Majlis Ash’shura approved the draft law on Collection of State Dues and the draft law on Rights of Persons with Disabilities and referred them to the State Council. The council also approved the proposed draft Law on Combating Tobacco and Its Derivatives, at its regular meeting held under the chairmanship of Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, Chairman, on Tuesday.


At the outset of the meeting, the chairman of Majlis Ash’shura gave a speech during which he congratulated His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik on the advent of the holy month of Ramadhan, praying to Allah the Almighty to bestow His Majesty with abundant blessings, good health, happiness and a long life and prosperity and advancement for to the Omani people and the Islamic nation.


Ahmed bin Said al Sharqi, Chairman of the Financial and Economic Committee, reviewed the committee’s report on the draft law on Collection of State Dues and the committee’s efforts in studying the draft law. The draft law comprises 79 articles distributed over five chapters. While studying the draft law, the committee hosted a number of specialists from government agencies. The committee also held a joint meeting with the Legislative and Legal Committee during which it approved the consensus formula in most of the articles.


Mansour bin Zaher al Hajri, Chairman of the Health and Social Committee, discussed with the council members the committee’s report on its study of the draft law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. As part of its study of the draft law, the committee held a series of meetings with a number of community institutions in order to seek their views on the draft law.


Also approved at the meeting was the proposed draft law on combating tobacco and its derivatives, which was studied by the Health and Social Committee. The Legislative and Legal Committee reviewed the law, controlled the legal wording and examined the extent of its compatibility and consistency with the relevant laws implemented in the Sultanate of Oman.


At its regular meeting to be held today (Wednesday), Majlis Ash’sura will host Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education to deliver her ministry’s statement before the council.
