Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) inaugurated on Monday the Wadi Al Jifnain Dam in the Wilayat of al Seeb, a key project aimed at bolstering flood protection and water management in the region. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Sayyid Harib bin Thuwaini al Said, Assistant Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers for Conferences.

Eng Ali bin Mohammed al Abri, Undersecretary for Water Resources, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to establishing an integrated flood protection system, noting that Oman now has 200 dams of varying types, including groundwater recharge, surface storage, and flood protection dams. The Wadi al Jifnain Dam, which took three years to complete, is a crucial addition to this network.

Eng Yousef bin Masaud al Mandhari, Director of the Dams Department, explained that the dam was constructed to safeguard commercial and residential areas in al Khoud, al Hail, and al Mawaleh. Built with advanced technologies such as plastic concrete, modern water control systems, and real-time monitoring devices, the dam adheres to the highest safety and efficiency standards.

The dam features two concrete spillways, four water discharge gates, and an advanced monitoring system to ensure structural stability. With a storage capacity of 11.5 million cubic meters, it is designed to mitigate flood risks effectively while supporting sustainable water management.

Environmental impact studies were conducted by international standards, ensuring minimal disruption to biodiversity. Measures have been implemented to maintain natural corridors for wildlife.

The project, completed within schedule and under the supervision of a specialized consultant, was executed at a total cost of RO 45.6 million, covering construction and essential infrastructure works. The new dam is expected to play a vital role in enhancing flood resilience and securing water resources in Muscat Governorate.
