SUHAR, feb 23
The General-Directorate of Culture, Youth and Sports launched Afaq 2025, a transformative initiative aimed at fostering a culture of reading and enhancing knowledge awareness within Omani society.
Recently held in the Wilayat of Suhar, the programme featured a series of interactive workshops designed to strengthen reading skills, aligning with the national framework of future skills in Oman. By integrating modern educational tools, Afaq 2025 seeks to support children’s linguistic and intellectual development from an early age.
Hosted at the Cultural Complex of Al Batinah North Governorate, the initiative is a step toward building a knowledge-driven society where reading is an integral part of personal and academic growth. The programme equips parents, educators and community members with effective strategies to cultivate a lifelong love for reading among children, ensuring that the next generation develops strong literacy skills.
The three core workshops of Afaq 2025 focused on different aspects of childhood literacy and educational technology:
How to raise a child who reads: This session guided parents and educators on nurturing reading habits in children through early exposure to books, storytelling techniques, and the creation of a reading-friendly environment at home.
Utilising modern educational technology for children’s language development: Participants explored how digital tools and AI-driven applications can enhance language acquisition and comprehension, making learning more engaging and effective. Reflecting on the experience, participant Jawaher al Gafri noted, “Expanding our horizons with AI tools and applications to enhance a child’s reading fluency is a unique opportunity for us.”
The importance of reading and how to develop it in children: This session highlighted the cognitive, emotional and social benefits of reading, offering practical methods to improve children’s literacy skills and sustain their interest in books over time.
With the motto ‘Reading to Build a Better Future,’ Afaq 2025 aspires to nurture a generation that reads without limits, empowering individuals to navigate the world of knowledge with confidence. By fostering a deep appreciation for reading and integrating innovative learning techniques, the programme bridges cultural awareness and intellectual engagement, ensuring that Oman’s youth are well-prepared for academic and personal success. Through collaboration between educators, parents, and cultural institutions, Afaq 2025 paves the way for a more literate, informed and enlightened society.
