MUSCAT: SOHAR Port and Freezone has commenced deepening works for the navigation channel of the $1.6 billion Marsa LNG project, a strategic initiative to position Oman as a regional hub for clean marine fuel. The project involves removing approximately 4 million cubic metres of material to create a specialised navigation channel and a dedicated berth for LNG bunkering.

Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of SOHAR Port and Freezone, described the channel deepening as a pivotal step in establishing Suhar as a leader in sustainable marine transport services. The Marsa LNG project, set to be operational by September 2025, will produce 1 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually, powered by a 300-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant.

The project aligns with global environmental targets by providing low-emission marine fuel at competitive prices, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of maritime transport. It also supports Oman’s energy transition goals and reinforces SOHAR Port and Freezone’s role as a strategic hub for global trade and innovation. — ONA
