Oman: A beacon of wisdom, hospitality and integrity

I’m not the easiest person to get along with. I have high standards, and little patience for incompetence, and I don’t hold back when criticising governments — especially my own. I love my country, England, but I am also its harshest critic. Many English people find me difficult, and I often feel the same about them. My few English friends are intelligent, successful people who somehow put up with me. Even my wife will admit I’m not easy.

That’s why I remain amazed at how the Omani people have welcomed me without judgment. Despite my sharp edges, Omanis treat me with kindness and respect. I’ve travelled widely, yet I have never experienced such genuine warmth and generosity anywhere else. It would not be an exaggeration to say I’ve fallen in love with Oman and its people.

At a time when the world seems consumed by conflict and self-interest, Oman stands apart. It is a country built on honesty, hospitality and strong community values. Violent crime is almost nonexistent. Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Oman proved that a nation can be stable, fair and caring without losing its identity.

Oman is one of the few places where honesty still means something. While corruption is rampant in much of the world, Oman has remained remarkably clean. Whether in business, government, or daily life, fairness and trust are deeply ingrained. It is the least corrupt country in the Arab world, a testament to its leadership’s commitment to integrity and transparency.

Unlike many nations where politicians are only out for themselves, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik prioritises his people. Oman’s government provides free healthcare and education — not just as political promises, but as a reality. Leaders are connected to the needs of their citizens rather than detached elites ruling from a distance.

Omani hospitality is legendary. Here strangers invite you into their homes for coffee and dates, not out of politeness but because generosity is part of the culture. In an increasingly individualistic world, Oman has preserved its sense of community. Neighbours look out for one another, and family connections matter more than material wealth. No one is left to struggle alone.

Oman’s approach to development also sets it apart. While some nations bulldoze through progress — Dubai, for example — Oman balances modernisation with cultural and environmental preservation. Growth benefits everyone, not just the elite.

While many countries thrive on war and political games, Oman has chosen a different path — one of peace and diplomacy. It has remained neutral in regional conflicts, acting as a mediator rather than taking sides. Yet its government does not shy away from condemning injustice, as seen in its stance against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

Unlike nations that rely on military might for influence, Oman demonstrates that real power comes from wisdom and dialogue. This has earned it international respect as a country that leads with reason, not aggression. While others flex their military muscles or impose economic threats, Oman has built lasting relationships through trust and stability.

Many nations struggle to retain their traditions in the face of globalisation, but Oman has found a perfect balance. Its cities blend modern infrastructure with traditional architecture, and its people take pride in their heritage. Progress here does not come at the cost of identity. Oman proves that a country can grow and evolve while remaining true to its values.

In contrast, the US, particularly under Donald Trump, could learn a thing or two from Oman. Empires built on military strength eventually collapse, leaving their people lost with no guiding values. Real strength is not found in war or economic dominance but in good governance, culture and the principles that hold a nation together.

America’s threats of economic and military aggression, whether excessive import tariffs or threats of obliteration, have cost its respect worldwide. Instead of increasing its influence, it is strengthening its rivals. The global winds of change are shifting but Trump seems dangerously unaware.

Oman has shown that wisdom not war is the key to lasting success. It remains one of the rare nations that balance tradition with modernity, peace with strength and hospitality with integrity.

While many countries struggle with corruption, division and short-sighted leadership, Oman continues to shine as an example of what a nation can be. In a world often driven by self-interest, Oman proves that kindness, honesty and community are the true foundations of strength.
