Dr Amitabha Chanda Sr Consultant and Director of Neurosurgery in his presentation mentioned that Neurosurgery has come a long way in the last 2 or 3 decades. Nowadays, Neurosurgeries like advanced brain tumour surgery, advanced skull-base surgery, surgery for brain aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, endoscopic neurosurgery, paediatric neurosurgery and complex spine surgeries are all done with the latest techniques using latest gadgets. He showed his operative videos to the doctors attending to visualise how all these latest techniques are used. He also showed the technique of “Awake Brain Surgery for brain tumours” a relatively novel technique for functional preservation of brain, in which the Patient is Awake throughout the operation! He also discussed the future of neurosurgery.
Dr Ajay Kumar Consultant Trauma and Joint Replacement in his presentation said “Robotic Assisted” Hip and Knee joint replacement has been a phenomenal development in the field of joint replacement surgery. He showed the latest generation of Smith and Nephew robot (CORI) which can perform total hip replacement, Uncompartmentalised (Partial) Knee Replacement and Total Knee Replacement. He emphasised, Robotic assisted Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) reduces post-operative alignment outliers and improves gap balancing compared to conventional TKA. It reduces bone and soft tissue damage and improves early functional recovery. Concluding his presentation, he said C K Birla can coordinate with doctors in Oman to embrace the evolution in replacement surgery.
