Muscat: Trees are the lungs of modern cities, playing a crucial role in enhancing the environment, improving air quality and promoting overall well-being. With increasing urbanisation, afforestation in residential areas has become a necessity rather than a luxury.
Trees act as natural air purifiers, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. In areas affected by heavy traffic and industrial pollution, they help reduce toxic emissions and improve air quality.
Environmental specialist Ahmed al Maawali emphasises, "Trees are a practical solution to combat urban pollution and absorb harmful substances from the air."
Studies show that tree-lined neighbourhoods experience fewer respiratory illnesses, such as asthma and allergies. Trees also serve as dust and dirt insulators, minimising the harmful effects of air pollutants.
Beyond health benefits, green spaces contribute to mental well-being. Research indicates that proximity to trees reduces stress, enhances mood and fosters a sense of relaxation.
Fatima al Rashedi, a resident of a green neighbourhood, shares, "Walking among trees helps me relax and forget daily pressures."
Urban areas often suffer from the ‘heat island effect,’ where concrete structures absorb and retain heat. Trees provide natural shade, cooling down surrounding areas and reducing the reliance on air conditioning. Muscat Municipality has launched afforestation initiatives to lower temperatures and cut energy consumption in residential areas.
Trees support a wide range of living organisms, providing shelter and food for birds, insects and other wildlife.
Dr Khalid al Ghailani, Professor of Environmental Science, highlights, "Urban trees are not just decorative but essential for maintaining ecological balance."
Green neighbourhoods are more attractive to investors and potential homeowners, increasing property values. Well-planned afforestation initiatives can transform residential areas into vibrant, livable spaces, fostering social interaction and strengthening community bonds.
Afforestation in residential areas is not just an aesthetic enhancement but an environmental and economic necessity. Expanding green spaces improves air quality, reduces temperatures, supports biodiversity and enhances the overall quality of life. Municipalities must continue their afforestation efforts and encourage community participation in creating greener, healthier cities.
