Oman strengthens energy cooperation with Japan

MUSCAT: As part of Oman’s efforts to enhance international cooperation in energy transition, Mohsen bin Hamad al Hadhrami, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, participated in the Japan Cooperation Centre for Petroleum and Sustainable Energy Conference. In his speech, Al Hadhrami emphasized the importance of developing national competencies to meet the demands of the energy transition while highlighting the role of international collaboration in supporting these efforts. This initiative contributes to achieving sustainable development and promoting the use of clean energy sources.


On the sidelines of the conference, the Under-Secretary met with several officials from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry. The discussions focused on the latest developments in energy transition, including Japan’s policies in this domain, the role of renewable energy and hydrogen in electricity generation, heavy industries, and the logistics sector.


The visit also included engagements with leading energy and technology companies. Al Hadhrami toured Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to explore the latest advancements in gas and hydrogen-powered electricity generation turbines, electrolysis technologies for hydrogen production, and the role these innovations play in supporting the energy transition. Additionally, he visited several iron and steel companies to discuss the sector’s aspirations to utilize clean hydrogen in production processes.


In the transportation sector, the Under-Secretary visited Toyota to examine global and local trends in using hydrogen as a sustainable fuel. He also met with Japanese trading companies importing Omani liquefied natural gas (LNG) to discuss the latest energy market developments and explore opportunities for future cooperation.


This visit aligns with Oman’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international partnerships in sustainable energy and leverage the latest technologies to support its energy transition strategies. These initiatives are key to achieving the nation’s energy and sustainability goals, contributing to economic and environmental resilience.
