MUSCAT: Indian Social Club (ISC), Oman, hosted a workshop on Investment, Succession Planning and Carefree Retirement on January 25. The session, conducted by Ms Afshan Patel, offered valuable insights into navigating financial complexities and preparing for a rewarding future.
Ms Patel, a Chartered Accountant (India), Certified Public Accountant (Canada), Certified Internal Auditor (USA) and holder of a Post Graduate Diploma in Islamic Banking and Insurance, brought extensive expertise to the session. Having worked with the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) and the University of Toronto, she is a guest faculty member at the College of Banking and Finance (CBF), Muscat, and a published writer on Corporate Governance and Economics.
She remarked, "The aforementioned qualifications are parameters that society requires to evaluate you. I would much prefer to just be identified as a good human being and continue working at improving myself in that sphere."
The workshop covered the fundamentals of investments, succession planning and retirement strategies. Attendees learned about various investment classes — bonds, shares, mutual funds, real estate and gold — highlighting their features, risks and returns. The importance of identifying individual risk profiles was emphasised as a starting point for successful investing.
On succession planning, Ms Patel underlined the challenge of initiating the process and stressed the value of timely, organised planning to ensure a smooth transition of assets in line with one’s wishes. She also advocated for periodic reviews of investment portfolios as a pathway to achieving a carefree retirement.
The interactive session, supported by ISC Chairman Babu Rajendran and the Management Committee, was well-received by attendees, who expressed their appreciation and urged ISC to organise more workshops in future.
