MUSCAT: Oman, represented by the Ministry of Education (MoE), celebrated the International Day of Education on January 24, aligning with the United Nations' aim to achieve quality and inclusive education. The theme for this year’s celebration was 'Artificial Intelligence and Education: Challenges and Opportunities.'

Dr Mahmoud al Abri, Secretary, Omani National Commission for Education, highlighted Oman’s commitment to digital transformation, noting that AI integration into education is crucial for economic and social progress. Efforts include AI-driven curriculum digitisation projects, interactive digital content, and the establishment of specialised chairs in AI at local universities. The Ministry of Education is also actively collaborating with international entities to implement AI technologies in teaching, evaluation, and management, making strides in both educational infrastructure and AI training programmes.

This initiative is part of Oman’s broader efforts to harness AI for sustainable educational development, with numerous AI-based programmes and innovations aimed at enhancing teaching and learning experiences. Through partnerships with the private sector and ongoing research initiatives, Oman is positioning itself as a regional leader in AI-powered education.

The MoE's continued focus on AI in education is evident through various initiatives, including the development of AI-enabled classrooms, the establishment of AI labs in schools, and the launch of research initiatives in collaboration with the Unesco Chair for Artificial Intelligence at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). These efforts are designed to not only equip educators and students with the skills needed to navigate an AI-driven world but also to foster a culture of innovation and creativity in the educational process. With these comprehensive strategies, Oman aims to enhance its educational quality and infrastructure, ensuring that future generations are prepared for the challenges and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence.
