Oman sees 2.2 percent drop in newborns in 2024

Muscat: There has been a decrease of 2.2 percent in the number of births recorded in the Sultanate of Oman in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the Monthly Statistical Bulletin issued by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The total number of births fell to 69,561, with the number of Omani newborns declining by 3.7 percent, compared to expatriate births that showed an increase of 11.8 percent.


The report highlights a notable gender disparity among Omani births, with male births declining by 4.3 percent and female births dropping by three percent.


The expatriate male childbirths rose by 12.7 percent, compared to female childbirths which increased by 10.7%.


In contrast, the number of deaths in the Sultanate of Oman increased by 3.1 percent to 9,264 by the end of 2024. Deaths among Omanis rose by 2.6%, totaling 7,413, with a 5.8 percent increase among males, while female deaths decreased by 1.7 percent.


Expatriate deaths saw a sharper rise of 5.5 percent, with male deaths increasing by 4.2 and female deaths by 10.7 percent.
