Muscat: The proposed water taxi project will be not part of the public transportation system but a tourist service to facilitate the movement of visitors from one attraction to another.

Speaking to the Observer, Eng Khamis bin Mohammed al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport, said, "The tender has been already floated and will be awarded this year. Water taxis have been planned for the governorates of Muscat Musandam and Sharqiyah to connect a few areas of tourist interest or attractions. It won't be a public transport service.

It may be noted that the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has invited the participation of international and local companies specialized in developing, managing, and operating water taxi services.

It may be noted that the Greater Muscat Structure Plan (GMSP) places great importance on connectivity via public transportation and less dependence on private vehicles, according to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MoHUP).

Some of the requirements for a water taxi include that the company must be commercially registered, must have a license to practice the activity of water taxi by fare, certificate of origin of the marine water taxi unit, proof of ownership, age of the taxi unit shall be not more than 15 years from the date of its construction or reconstruction.
