Mohammed, Aziza claim 10th Oman Desert Marathon crowns

Mohammed El Morabity rounded off his brilliant run at the 10th Oman Desert Marathon (ODM) by grabbing the overall title after the 21 km fifth and final stage in Bidiyah on Wednesday.


The Moroccan runner came better of his illustrious brother Rachid El Morabity, who is a seven-time champion of the ODM, by 12 minutes and 23 seconds to claim his second ODM title.


Mohammed (15:44:25) has registered four stage wins out of five, missing out only in the fourth night stage to Rachid.


Rachid, won his solo stage in the fourth, consolidating his second overall position (15:56:48).


Oman’s Saleh al Saidi (16:02:47) achieved a creditable third place in overall general classification after taking second spot in the fifth stage. Saleh also took third place in the 30 km night stage competed by 30 runners.

The Oman Army runner had come close to win some stages with his consistent performances during the tenth edition of ODM.


Other local runners also made impressive final standings with Ghaith al Saeedi (16:48:37) taking fourth ahead of Hani al Saidi (18:09:57) in fifth,


Khalid al Farsi (18:33:49) in sixth and Khalid Said al Jabri (19:19:01) in seventh spot.


Russia’s Anton Zyrianov (20:02:17) claimed eighth spot ahead of Omanis Malik al Mufarji (21:04:52) in ninth and Ibrahim al Mufarji (22:35:59) in tenth position.


AZIZA BAGS WOMEN’S TITLE


Star marathoner Aziza Raji (22:39:17) took the women’s title after claiming an impressive 11th in overall classification.


Great British women runners Lydia Oldham (25:56:30) and Sally Ford (27:49:20) capped their brilliant Oman outing with second and third spots, followed by fellow female German runner Tanja Schoenenborn (28:05:41) in fourth.


Oman Army ‘A’ runner Saleh al Saidi topped the local section.


Teammate Ghaith al Saeedi was second in the section ahead of Hani al Saidi of Oman Army ‘B’ in third. Khalid al Farsi of Oman Flour Mills Company ‘A’ and Khalid Said al Jabri of Oman Army ‘B’ completed the top five Omani list.

In the team section, Oman Army ‘A’ took top spot ahead of Oman Army ‘B’ and Oman Flour Mills Company ‘A’. Oman Flour Mills Company ‘B’ and Jabel Team were the other teams in fray.


In the individual classification, Mohammed and Rachid took the top two spots and Russia’s Anton Zyrianov came third.


Great Britain’s Patrick Wiltshire (24:48:38) was fifth overall, followed by Shane McShera (25:06:50) of Ireland in sixth and GBR’s Mohammed Ashraf Abdin (25:31:41) in seventh.


Women runners Lydia, Sally and Tanja completed the top 10 respectively.
