

MUSCAT: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) launched the second edition of the ‘Arabic Language and Omani Culture’ programme on Monday, under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Dr Fahd bin Al Julanda Al Said, Vice-Chancellor of SQU. The programme, which runs until February 20, has welcomed 77 participants from the Centre for Arab Civilization at Kazan Federal University in Russia and the Union of Dankook University and Pusan University of Foreign Studies in South Korea.
Mahmoud bin Abdullah Al Kindi, Director of the International Cooperation Office at SQU, highlighted the success of the first edition, which saw 80 participants from Russia and South Korea. "The second edition builds on this success, offering theoretical and practical lessons in Arabic language through the Language Partner Programme, while also exploring Omani history and culture through lectures and field visits," he said.
Dr Faisal bin Saif Al Saadi, Assistant Dean of the College of Arts for Training and Community Service, emphasised the programme's role in uniting participants through the Arabic language and their shared interest in Omani culture. "Participants will delve into Omani cities, customs, traditions, and various aspects of local life. This programme strengthens cultural connections and highlights pride in the identity and mother tongue shared by Oman, Russia, and South Korea," he stated.
Representing the Russian delegation, Emilia, Deputy Director of the Civilisation Center, praised the programme for allowing students to immerse themselves in Omani customs, traditions, and history. Dr Mona Farouk, Director of the North African Studies Center, speaking on behalf of the Korean delegation, lauded the programme's efforts to showcase the rich diversity and tolerance inherent in Omani culture.
This year’s edition aims to enhance participants’ Arabic language skills namely speaking, reading, and writing - through immersion in an Arabic-speaking environment. Additionally, it provides insights into Oman’s cultural and civilisational heritage and its many tourist attractions. The programme stands as a testament to the strong cultural ties and mutual respect among Oman, Russia, and South Korea, enriching participants with a deeper understanding of Omani traditions and values. - ONA
