NIZWA: Raqaa Student Company, a team from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, (UTAS), Nizwa, has achieved a breakthrough in sustainability by converting paper waste into biofuel. This innovative project aims to address environmental challenges associated with accumulating waste while providing a sustainable alternative to traditional fuels.

Mohammed bin Waleed al Shukaili, CEO of Raqaa, explained that the process involves bio-fermentation, where cellulose from paper waste is converted into fermentable sugars, which are then transformed into bioethanol using bacteria and yeasts. Targeted materials include old newspapers, office waste and other high-cellulose paper.

According to Aya bint Khamis al Batraniyah, the company’s Research and Development Officer, this initiative reduces paper waste in landfills by 70 per cent and cuts carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50 per cent compared to fossil fuels. Raqaa also plans to expand its scope to include other organic waste and integrate renewable energy, such as solar power, into its production processes.

The team’s work has garnered attention through events like the Entrepreneurs Forum, World Entrepreneurs Day, and the Injaz Oman Competition, reflecting Oman’s growing focus on youth-driven sustainability efforts. — ONA
