MUSCAT: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) container ports have made significant strides in global efficiency rankings, with 10 ports featuring in the list of the world’s 70 most efficient ports for 2024, according to the GCC Statistical Center. These ports, selected from 405 globally, highlight the region’s critical role in maritime logistics.

The Sultanate of Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are also among the 35 nations with the largest maritime fleets, based on the 2024 UNCTAD report. The Gulf region’s commercial fleet accounts for 54.2% of the total Arab fleet, with over 25 major seaports operational.

Two Gulf ports were categorized as large-production facilities, each processing over 4 million containers annually, while eight others were medium-production ports with outputs ranging between 500,000 and 4 million containers.

The center emphasized that these achievements stem from sustained investments in port infrastructure, transforming them into global logistics hubs. It also highlighted the strategic role of Gulf ports in global shipping, supported by initiatives like the Unified Maritime Operations Center, which ensures secure and efficient navigation in GCC waters. —ONA
