Rising up to 3,000 metres, Al Jabal Al Akhdhar has long been a haven for those seeking respite from Oman’s scorching summers. Its year-round moderate climate fosters a unique agricultural bounty, including pomegranates, walnuts and the famed damask roses. But beyond its natural allure, Al Jabal Al Akhdhar is now being reimagined as a global tourism hub.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, in partnership with the private sector, is working diligently to enhance Al Jabal Al Akhdhar’s status as a top-tier tourism destination.

Empowering Communities Through Hospitality

Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar is not just another luxury resort; it’s a beacon of community partnership. The hotel has made significant strides in employing and training local youth. This initiative not only supports the local economy but also fosters a sense of pride and ownership among the residents.

The hotel’s commitment extends to its kitchen, where locally sourced ingredients take centre stage. Pomegranates from nearby orchards are transformed into refreshing welcome drinks, while fig-based jams and fusion dishes showcase the region’s agricultural heritage. These small yet meaningful touches underscore the hotel’s dedication to celebrating and preserving local traditions.

Design That Whispers the Mountain’s Stories

Every corner of Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar tells a story. From the intricate silver metalwork in the rooms to the handcrafted wooden donkey sculpture in the lobby, the design pays homage to the Green Mountain’s natural beauty and cultural legacy. Each of the hotel’s five floors is inspired by elements unique to the region — from damask roses and saffron to pomegranates and the indigo plant.

Walking through the hallways, I couldn’t help but admire the use of locally sourced wood and reclaimed materials. The attention to detail extends to the rooms, where patterns and textures mirror the rugged beauty of the surrounding canyons. It’s a design philosophy that seamlessly blends luxury with authenticity, creating a space that feels both grounded and extraordinary.

“The hotel as a concept is designed to bring the neighbourhood into the building. So each touch point that you see through our keys, through our public spaces, you'll find elements of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar in a contemporary way, being reimagined, to create energy for the guests, so when guests arrive at the property, they feel immersed in something different and something new,” said James Reeves, General Manager of the hotel.

The hotel’s collaboration with nearby communities goes beyond employment. By sourcing fruits, vegetables and even furniture locally, it ensures that the benefits of tourism are shared widely. This model of community-focused sustainability not only enriches the guest experience but also reinforces the importance of preserving Al Jabal Al Akhdhar’s unique ecosystem and cultural heritage.

A Personal Retreat with a Purpose

As I stood on the hotel’s rooftop lounge, gazing at the endless canyons bathed in golden light, I felt a deep sense of connection — to the land, its people and the stories that make Al Jabal Al Akhdhar so special. The Vue Rooftop & Lounge, the highest of its kind in the Middle East, offers not just spectacular views but also a sense of serenity that’s hard to put into words.

Whether it’s indulging in wellness treatments at the Jala Spa, exploring ancient villages, or savoring the culinary delights crafted from local ingredients, every moment at the Indigo feels purposeful and enriching. It’s a place where luxury meets authenticity and where tourism serves as a bridge to a sustainable future.

The Road Ahead

With new infrastructure developments and a clear vision for the future, Al Jabal Al Akhdhar is poised to become a global icon of sustainable and inclusive tourism. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s initiatives, combined with the efforts of properties like Hotel Indigo, ensure that Al Jabal Al Akhdhar will continue to captivate and inspire for generations to come.

Al Jabal Al Akhdhar is more than a destination; it’s a story of resilience, community and the harmonious coexistence of tradition and modernity. And for those lucky enough to visit, it’s a journey into the heart of Oman’s most captivating neighborhood — a journey you’ll never forget.
